I bought this backup piece for a refurbished computer I work on. Jumper selection is mostly a trial and error process. Good luck in determining from the image where H>> you need to set jumpers to determine the master or slave device settings. Most hard drives have settings on the hard drive itself. This one doesn't! I've been playing with it for two days and still can't get the software that came with it to recognize that the hard drive is there. Take my advice and stay with Western Digital, that's me now! After reading other reviews I thought I'd try installing it again on a Pentium III, the hard drive is VERY LOUD, the computer never recognized it. Even the installer never recognized the presence of a hard drive. I installed it as MASTER and the second disk as slave. An IDE error occurred while loading. I changed it to the slave (had to work a bit to figure out the jumpers) and the second disk to the master. The software and computer never recognized the slave drive that was Maxtor. The hard drive was very warm, almost hot, when I took it out of the computer. HONESTLY, this is NOT a very good hard drive. I've never had problems like this with Western Digital.
