I have 4 other AquaClear filters and love them. One of the positive features of the AquaClear design is the ability to remove 3 filter segments (intact) from the block without having to remove the entire block from the aquarium, clean the filter components and return them (to the media holder). ) to the unit. This new AQ50 filter has a loose biocarrier meaning it is not in a bag unlike others I have and different from the picture on the filter box. Anyone who has cleaned an AquaClear filter knows the benefits of storing biomedia in a bag. I finally read the instructions and found a bag of supplies (which looked a bit like packing supplies and I initially threw them away). When I discovered that, all was right with the world again. This filter has a very simple and effective design. It's easy to clean and we all know simplicity. When it's not easy, we tend to neglect it and then our water quality deteriorates and our fish suffer. So simplicity is good for us and good for our fish. I bought another more complex filter for a new 20 gallon tank but after 2 months it still didn't work. I plan to use this new AC 50 in a separate tank and then upgrade to a 20 gallon tank. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with a more complex design. I'm a mechanical engineer and I understand design. This is a well designed unit and a great bang for your buck.
