I let our little dachshund sit in the passenger seat when I'm alone with him in the car. But when my husband rides, "Roby" doesn't like sitting on his lap, and Roby doesn't like sitting in the back because he's spoiled. This barrier keeps Robie in the back (he gets used to the idea of having to stay in the back when Dad is in the car). The elastic mesh opens at the top so you can put something in the middle (e.g. a sleeve or a long cuff). That's where I keep my umbrella, which is much more convenient than it used to be when I kept it in the seat pocket behind the driver's seat. When it rained, I had to do some serious yoga moves to get the umbrella from behind. It wasn't very practical to leave it in front for the rare occasion when it was raining just as I was about to get out of the car. However, it wasn't fun to get it out of the trunk in the rain! Now it's right in the middle where it's easy to get to but nothing else bothers you. Now Roby stays behind and the umbrella stays within reach. Ideal!
