Review on πŸ’ͺ Powerful Google Pixelbook: i7 Processor, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB Storage by Gene Rosado

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Wanted to like it but lots of bugs and beta features

Really good hardware but numerous software issues make it difficult to recommend at the moment. I think in about a year Chrome OS will evolve into a more powerful desktop OS with coexisting Linux apps, Android apps, progressive web apps and traditional web apps, but it's hard to recommend for now unless You just stick to the web app. Android apps are difficult to use due to scaling issues, poor implementation of tablet-sized layouts and pause states, and quite a bit of instability (even in Google's own apps). The scaling issues extend to Chrome windows too - layouts are less broken than in Android apps, but unless you're going at 2x (a little more) or 1x (too little), you get some scaling artifacts that can be quite distracting. A smaller screen bezel so you don't have to zoom out from 2x would be a solution to this. With default scaling, many websites are designed for a display that's slightly wider than the Pixelbook's screen. Bluetooth is pretty buggy. It's like going back to Android's Bluetooth stack 3 years ago, devices never connect or disconnect during use. Don't get this if you rely on Bluetooth. This also applies to the Smart Lock and Snap functions, which are rather unreliable. The only other way to sign in is with your primary Google Account password. So if you're using a generated password, it's pretty cumbersome to log in if the smart lock isn't working. Trouble and try Linux apps. Bluetooth has the same issues in recent builds. Linux apps work, but many need GPU acceleration and it's coming (looks like it's actively being worked on). Great things about the hardware, great keyboard, it's a very well built machine and a pleasure to type on and use the trackpad. It's a bit cumbersome in tablet mode due to the weight and buttons on the back, but workable. If you primarily need a laptop and only occasionally use a tablet, I think that's pretty good. If you're primarily looking for a tablet, you'll be better served with other devices. If you are reading this in six months or a year the software will probably improve and then I can really recommend it. But right now it's very alpha/beta quality depending on the use case.
