I made mine smaller because my 65 lb dog could squeeze through when set to the widest opening. The 5.5 inch width is just enough for my 14 lb cat to get in and out without the dog getting in. I ended up having to use a drill to drive mine into the wall because when I just used the supplied sticky pads my dog was able to knock anything off the wall. Now that I figured it out, it works great. I use mine to allow my cat to roam freely around the house and lock my dog in my room when I'm away. My dog is an angel when I'm home, but when I'm not, he has weird quirks. He can't behave in my bedroom when I'm not at home. Baby gates, boxes, etc. do not work with him. I hated locking my cat in my room and so did she. She hid under the bed when I wanted to leave because she didn't want to be kicked out of her bedroom (her favorite spot). But it works great and keeps me and my two pets happy and well behaved.
