Review on πŸ”¨ High-quality Durable Square Mortising Chisel for Woodworking by Ricardo Mercado

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Very mediocre - hand tool

I had to cut a few 3/ 4 inch grooves into a fairly soft hardwood (Red Grandis). This job was painstakingly done with a Powermatic slotting machine (available here at Revain). The first few cuts are always the most difficult, regardless of the manufacturer, but they were very difficult to get out of the connection, and trying to lift the bit will result in the outer bit being pulled out of the slotter, leaving the auger bit inside. I bought some Powermatic slotted bits, but the 3/4" bits were too long to fit the work piece underneath. So I bought this shorter one and while it ended up getting the job done, it was slow and difficult. The Powermatic bits worked very well better. Only the 3/4" Powermatic was too long. If you're considering getting a slotter, the Powermatic is very good and has great documentation. An alternative to this would be to use the Forstner bits on the drill press and do a lot of the chiseling around aligning the cuts The Powermatic Stemmer does not produce perfect results and some cleaning of the bottom of the slot with a chisel is usually still required, but this is only a minor disadvantage compared to the significant time investment and improved quality that the Stemmer delivers.
