Installed a water softener 4 years ago, put 2 filters in front of the softener for the whole house. The former is a 5 micron baseball filter while the latter uses sub 1 micron filters. Lowes recently discontinued the Whirlpool line and their AO Smith carbon filters are 5 microns. I love spa filters, they have never caused any water flow issues so I plan to stick with them. And sub-1 micron filters can filter out some bacteria, so I like the added "just in case" protection, although my water tests are fine.
