I'm not a computer professional. I just needed an inexpensive CD/DVD reader/writer because our new laptop didn't have an internal floppy drive. So far this little gem has worked flawlessly. I've used it to install software on a laptop, burn CDs, and burn regular and dual layer DVDs. I haven't tried playing the Blu-ray, but everything I've done with it has worked on three different DVD players. I've also used it to rip CDs but have to complain about the speed. I used it to rip CDs and it took quite a while. I then tried ripping the CD using our old desktop with internal CD/DVD drive. The old laptop copied the CD in just a few minutes. I suspect the difference is due to the drive being connected via USB rather than the internal drive as the laptop is much faster at other tasks. Next time I have a CD to rip I'll try a portable device connected to an old desktop and update it. The only downside is that the USB ports have very short cables. It would be nice if they were a little longer. However, the cables are tucked away on the outside of the drive so they don't hang around. On my laptop it works fine with only 1 port.
