Good but not the best

I remember my mother used a similar one years ago but when I bought this one and tried it it was a little less comfortable. When the oil is cold it doesn't really spill out, but when it's too warm it spills out too much because it's soft. Same problem with retention between uses. If your family eats enough to use up the entire pot (about 1/2 packet of butter) at once, maybe it could work (if you can get the temperature right). For me and my wife it was more trouble than it was worth. But I found something that works. I use a gladware container lid that's the right rectangle size for a cob of corn and I soften the butter so it's ready to roll. I've also found that by adding salt and Old Bay (a must) to the oil I get better spread and it doesn't concentrate in one spot.
