I recently bought this knife sharpener for a good friend and I used to buy this sharpener for my sons too. I have one - still original - over 20 years old. With proper use and care, they will not wear out. This is the easiest and most reliable knife sharpener I have ever seen. It produces a sharper edge than any other marker sharpener; Edge 25 degrees versus the usual 30 degrees. It literally makes any knife of good enough quality razor sharp. The brown, rougher wheels define the cutting edge angle or leave a microscopic "jagged" edge for specialized tasks like slicing ripe tomatoes. The white side of the sharpener sharpens the edge for a finished, razor-like finish. Instructions are easy to digest in just a few seconds. My only caution is not to press too hard and hit the entire length of the blade. In our house we don't put the kitchen knife back in the drawer until it has been sharpened for the next use. With a McGowan sharpener, each knife only takes a few pulls, and usually only white stones are needed. I use this sharpener for hunting knives, roast beef knives and all pocket knives. If the wheels get stressed with steel during the grinding process (even with daily use, maybe once a year), just take an old toothbrush and some Comet cleaning powder and make them like new again in a minute. I recommend this sharpener to everyone!
