I needed this device to increase signal strength in my new home. I recently moved from California, where homes are primarily made of wood, to a newer, larger home in Florida, where homes use block for exterior and structural walls. This heavier design, combined with the distance between my wireless router and where I use my computer, seriously impacted my signal and throughput. I bought this device to solve this problem, which it did. Installation, including putting it into WiFi range extender mode, took just a few minutes out of the box. I was communicating with an incredible 100% signal strength almost immediately after setup, which was a stark contrast to 20% strength prior to setup. I experimented by going outside with my laptop and still connected to my home network with 80% or better signal until the end of my property. I love the fact that this device seems to work flawlessly with products from other vendors. One of my systems has a wireless SMC card and the other uses Linksys. My wireless router is an SMC. The installation instructions were a bit sparse. I'm a very technical user so I didn't need them, but a beginner might have trouble. Since I didn't have to contact tech support, I can't comment on the quality of support from D-Link. Since I haven't used this device as a hotspot, I can't comment on how well it performs in this mode either. However, if you are looking for a simple and inexpensive solution to extend the range of your existing WiFi and you have some technical savvy, this could be the solution for you. While I'm happy with this product, I gave it four stars because I haven't used all of the features or technical support from D-Link and I feel the documentation isn't beginner-friendly.
