Although I've just started with machining, I have a long experience with metrology. I got them out of a desire to step into the digital age. LOL I have several pairs of calipers from different manufacturers. I have 3 calipers (1 Mitutoyo, 1 Aerospace and 1 Mauser), 2 calipers (1 Aerospace and 1 Mitutoyo) and some random metric ones. First impression and build quality: The first thing that strikes me is gravity. in this thing. You lift it up and hold the tool with the weight. In my opinion that's good. I've kept (and used) cheap, poorly made digital calipers. You are not. long shot They feel good in the hand. The display is large and clear enough to read easily. Something my weak eyes really appreciate. The edges along the scale are broken so that there is no feeling of cutting. My taste would be a little more, but if you want or need that feel, there are "better" options on the market where you pay for something like this. Accuracy: Good enough for the girls I date. I have measured them with a variety of feelers, block gauges and standards from 1" to 5". They measured dead nuts accurately and always returned to zero. I was very impressed as I figured I would eventually get a reading that was off by 0.0005 inches. nope The jaws are very finely ground and when closed I could not find any gap between them over the entire length. Remember that calipers are machinists' approximations, and if you have something critical, you must do it with a microphone. Final Thoughts: You are not Mitutoyo or Starrett. If you want these, then spend three times more. You'll get a slightly nicer tool, but I don't think you'll find anything more accurate. I decided to keep the difference and buy more tools to complete my collection. As PS for iGaging and other manufacturers. How about LED-backlit LCD and rechargeable battery? This would be a nice upgrade for aging eyes, I think, and would save the hassle of having the right battery on hand if it needs to be replaced.
