This operates like a mini sump pump. When the water rises, the pump comes on. When the water level goes down to a low level, the pump shuts off. The amount of flow is settable to reasonable levels as specified on the box. In a fountain you just attach the pump to a hose and direct it where you want it or use the attachment to attach smaller tube feeds.I put it in the back yard bird bath. and it works there. The birds like it too. They are fun to watch though when the water level is low, because when the birds land in the water eventually they displace it to make the pump come on and they freak and fly away. Then they come back and it does it again. The bigger birds don't get bothered as much.Certainly gave live to a dull bird bath.
