Review on APEX RF 1050 Alkaline Filter Cartridge by Jeff Callier

THE WATER IS NOT VERY CLEAN WITH THIS PART

UPDATE January 2020: This is the second replacement filter (three filters total if counting the original purchase). The water was very black and even after a few weeks of use and after the last run of the water through the filter up to 10 minutes fine suspended particles remain in the filtered water. I'm guessing it's soot, but the water's taste isn't as fresh and clean as it used to be. I noticed a difference in the filter when I received it (a few months ago but I had just changed it) and called the company to inquire about the difference. I was told there was a small change, but it's the same. The previous replacement filter was also slightly different in composition, so I figured this one would work. Not so. I have a Brita jug filter, also with an alkaline cartridge, so I started running filtered water through a Brita filter. Although I installed a new Brita filter, the source water usually passes fast and the water filter slow. I suspect these are suspended in the water from the apex filter. So of course I will have to change the Brita filter more often. If after three months the suspended solids in the water (which affect the taste and smell of water) from the apex filter have not changed, I will hesitate to buy another replacement apex filter. The purpose of water filtration is to remove possible contaminants, and if the filter isn't working properly, it won't do its job. I am extremely disappointed. Previous Review: I ordered this alkaline filter replacement cartridge two days ago and received it much quicker than expected today. This is the first replacement for my Apex desktop filter. The pH measured with the Leisure Time Strips I use in my hot tub is around 7.8. I prefer higher alkalinity and use this water to fill my Brita jug, also essentially double filtered with an alkaline filter which raises the pH even more. I ran the water through the filter for 6 minutes first (4 minutes recommended) as the original water was black due to the carbon in the filter. It tastes great (no flavor) after 6 minutes and is very clear. I struggled to replace the filter and when I noticed a white film in the cartridge holder slot I spilled hot water on the seam line. Finally, I soaked the holder in hot water for 4 minutes twice and was able to open the holder by standing on my tiptoes and using my body weight to open. The filter I replaced looks fine. I will save and compare when I change the filter again in 6 months.
