Our old "instant" thermometer died so I was in dire need of a new one because we check all our meat and I always use the temperature to know when I'm the baked goods must be removed from the oven. We (speaking of the rest of the family, too) don't particularly care about meat temperature guidelines. Mainly because it's a tiny, awkward font. The rest of the thermometer is standard. It differs from our old one in two ways. First, the probe is not spring loaded. You have to open it manually, which is not a problem. Secondly, it differs in that it is much faster. I still wouldn't say it's instant, but it's nice not to stand around and watch the numbers go up.
