Review on πŸ“± Wireless Duplex Mobile Color Page Scanner - Brother RDS-920DW by Nick Narvasa

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good scanner, but many flaws.

Main Disadvantage: This scanner cannot connect to the network. As a result: * If you want to transfer your files wirelessly, you must disconnect from the Internet (even if it's wired), transfer the files, and reconnect to the Internet. * Wi-Fi is slow and fairly unreliable. It often stopped in the middle of a file transfer even though the connection was still there. You'll have to disconnect, reconnect, and restart the current file.* One thing that doesn't help is that the PDF files are pretty HUGE. Essentially they are an inefficient encapsulation of the underlying JPG file. Although they can easily be reduced in size over time, by overhauling them with Adobe Acrobat Professional, for example; However, the large size means that if you try to transfer more than 10-page PDF files wirelessly, you risk getting stuck in the middle of the transfer and you have to restart the file.***** ** ************************* One particularly annoying bug that many people don't notice is the way it manages its battery. When switched off, charging takes place at C/3 level; on C/5; to 4.13 V, after which CV is switched on. In layman's terms, this means you can expect the battery to fail in 4 to 6 months if you leave the scanner plugged in. Which might not be that bad, but with two caveats. Firstly, when the battery is low, the scanner will not work, even when connected to the network. Second, the battery is pretty expensive - $50 to $70 from what I've seen. In order for the battery to last a long time, you must do two things: 1. Do not turn off the scanner while in use if it is connected to the mains. In other words, turn it on before you plug it in and don't turn it off until you unplug it.2. Keep the battery level between about 1 and 2 bar. Ironically, the manual actually warns you about the dangers of too high battery voltage, and then the scanner does exactly the opposite. ***************** **** ** ******** The last disadvantage is that the scanner does not scan very smoothly (see attached picture). Even when using the included document guide, it's a bit tiring to to scan quite straight; However, using this hub introduces the additional problem of poorly detecting scan edges, especially when scanning in color. On the other hand, documents don't jam much; so that's enough for me. ************************************* Contrary to what another reviewer said, scans this scanner * long checks. More specifically, it scans about 29 inches and then stops in the middle of the check; So you have to manually pull out the check, fold it where it left off, and scan the next page. Conclusion: I bought this scanner because I have always found Brother products to be very reliable; However, I have never owned a battery powered Brother product and was unaware of how terrible the battery management was. So in order not to end up paying more than $50 for a battery after six months, I have to face the inconvenience of following the (my own) battery management advice above. this scanner *scans* long checks.
