While the official installation guide is a bit confusing, the actual installation is not too difficult and many people have posted their installation guide on forums like MBWorld. A particularly helpful installation video from Bucks Garage, found by searching "E550 CarPlay". I removed the radio and glove box (9 screws), installed the block in the space between the radio and glove box and raised the WiFi antenna. Glove box (see attached picture). The official guide suggests using the AUX channel for audio and connecting an AUX cable. I didn't connect the AUX cable but decided to connect my phone to MB Bluetooth in addition to CarPlay. In this setting, the CarPlay interface would still show music information and the previous/next track could still be controlled in CarPlay. An added benefit is that the mute button and the previous/next track button on the steering wheel work differently than when using the AUX channel.
