We were looking for an alternative to energy intensive heat lamps. That's great. We are offline so power consumption is a big issue. Used internally on day-old chicks in summer and they are fine. I had 6 chicks but 12 would probably be fine as they could all get together. yes it will get dirty Chickens poop a lot! But it's hard plastic and washes off with warm water on a paper towel. The height of the lamp does not have to be constantly changed. When it's hot, they climb down, when it's cold, they climb up. No fire hazard. It doesn't feel very hot but gives off a lot of heat when you sit on it. The instructions say to put a pillow on it for 15 minutes to check when it arrives. I did this and the pad was nice and toasty on the contact area. Can't tell if this works outside in the colder months, but we always take chicks in the warmer months to make things easier. Very happy with the purchase. Arrived quickly as ordered.
