They do their job well but are not very comfortable

My daughter is learning how to ride her new inline skates and they are saving lives - or at least knees! Velcro isn't very comfortable on bare skin, but I created some barriers between your skin and the pads by cutting off the sleeves of an old shirt and the legs of some old leggings. You have to put on a lot of gear, but it protects you!
