They never seem to show photos of this peak and it never occurred to me that it is always upside down. I think I should have paid attention to the threads. When installed they are smooth on top and look very pretty. It consists of two parts with a float inside and the cap is tapered so the cap fits snugly in the fitting and keeps smelly gas out. When your system backs down, the float floats up, allowing the waste water outside instead of into your house. Make sure the top is a few inches below the lowest drain in the building. For some reason ours was lengthened so even without a hat, backups flowed out of the toilet below. Uninstalled the extension and installed this type. No more trouble. It's durable, made of thick plastic, and I'm guessing it will last anywhere from a few days to forever.
