This is the only drill that does everything I need and doesn't cost a fortune. 1. Not battery operated, they are useless for drilling metal. 2. Drills through metal very well: 3. VSR with hair trigger. Believe it or not, many of us actually WANT a hair trigger, because drilling through metal without breaking the bit means drilling with very high pressure and lots of cutting fluid as close to the bit's speed (SLOW) as possible . For some reason it's very easy to press on it with one hand and hold the stone still and steady while lubricating it with the other. Once you start moving, the speed is controlled very precisely, so the sensitive trigger really helps. 4. Flip over to bring out bits that like to cut into metal when punching it. I don't see how they can do without a reverse gear when drilling into anything harder than soft wood. Even oak can get a little so tight that you'll have to take it off and turn it inside out if you can't get it out. 5. When grinding or grinding with a bit, YOU NEED a turner AND a locking lever, otherwise the drill may fly away if you are forced to grind in the same direction as the drill. Since it has a trigger, I can put this suction cup in a vise and grind/sand/clean small parts, like my old rigid that broke after years of mishandling (a very powerful drill bit that looks like it dropped, probably because it was so useful, or I would have bought another). BUT it sounds like a space shuttle taking off, probably at the same decibel level. I have to tighten a sleeve during sharpening, unlike any other drill I've had. So I'm deducting a star for that. Only time will tell if this holds up, I'll edit it when it starts to go haywire. If only there was a drill that could do all of this and lock down at any speed. I will keep dreaming PS: If your drill smokes, send it back, it's defective. Either that or you should consider getting a sharper drill bit, blunt ones will burn wood.
