Review on Convenient and Reliable Drywall Hollow Wall Anchors: Introducing CONFAST Self Drilling Fasteners by Jason Dahlkemper

Not quite like the originals

These CONFAST drywall anchors are nearly identical to the vintage drywall anchors sold at hardware stores with one caveat: the outer flange is slightly more concave, weaker, and tends to detach from the main body (screw section) when drilled or gently hand driven into the drywall. Although the anchors are similar in appearance, the main differences lie in the weight and strength of the metal used - older style anchors are heavier and have a stronger construction. Well, isn't that the case with a lot of things that are made these days? Workaround: My experience is to pre-drill when this type of anchor needs to be used for accuracy. And that's still the case, but if you want these anchors to be flush with the drywall when you're done, you'll first need to use a utility knife to cut away any drywall protruding from the drilled hole and smooth the drywall surface. Then screw the dowel into the drywall so that it fits snugly against the wall. It won't be quite flush, but screwing in further will loosen the flange. At this point I take a small hammer and pound the flange and anchor against the drywall to reshape the flange so that it sinks into the drywall. Then I screw it in by hand, maybe a quarter turn more, but very carefully. I used this box of 100 dowels to remodel a kitchen pantry with new shelving and I still find that - even using the method I described - about three out of ten dowels come loose and rip the flange off the base. It's not great, but it's the best solution I've found for using this anchor brand. And I could not find any other anchors of this type. So if the manufacturer doesn't go for a higher quality metal, that's what we get. Yes, I will buy other types of anchors in the future to see how well they compare, but that's money I could give to CONFAST . if they have produced a high-quality product from the start.
