Do you want to risk ruining your engine? Get AirAid. No? Get something with a clear lid

I installed an Airaid 4Runner inlet on my 2016 4Runner. Everything was great at first - throttle response is definitely better, but despite being an extremely conservative driver, very MPG oriented, I checked my fuel log on the Simply Auto app which I use to keep track of everything, I really have didn't understand any MPG gain from it. And no, after the first week of installation I didn't drive the car any more than before. Well life got better, I started dating and getting married. So I had other thoughts and wasn't really thinking about the air filter. Yesterday I took the time to undo the screws to remove the cover and inspect it and to my absolute dismay I found that the filter had fallen completely out of the mounting tube although I did my best to unclamp the clamp tighten which holds the filter on the pipe. When reinstalling the filter I noticed that the angle of the filter was not quite level. It is actually sloped downwards, which would cause the filter to loosen and fall off over time due to vibration. Now I know what all the skeptics will say, oh he just didn't tighten the clamp tight enough. But that's not the case. I made sure to tighten this clamp when installing it because I knew I didn't want it to fall off. I had a K&N filter on a previous car which I installed with no problem and it never fell off. This one did. Based on the amount of dirt I found in the intake pipe I would guess this thing fell off about 1 year ago. I am deeply shocked by this discovery. Needless to say I will be removing this airbox and buying another airbox that will actually allow me to look inside the airbox so I can see how dirty it is/if it is properly attached. So if you want to risk premature engine death, buy this. Or if you're someone who works on their car every weekend and likes to keep checking it, go ahead. But I'm not like that. I like to set it up and forget about it once it's up and running. And it's definitely not a part you can forget about like a K&N or S&B filter.

Pros
  • Consistent test results
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
