Works great

Was easy to set up. The IPtables type setting won't please many people, but I prefer it over the simplified versions. The screen can be turned off, which is good. Doesn't get hot even with 22 devices connected to 1 Gb/s fiber optic internet. This is the most decent price for the cost of a router I've ever had. Works out of the box with UnifiPro hotspot. The LAN transfer speed is amazing. No choking thanks to good packet throughput. I was able to send real-time logs to the Splunk instance to monitor network traffic. Very powerful features if you know what you are doing. Fanless but not hot, been in use non-stop for over 1 year. So no annoying fan noise. The user interface is simple and easy to use. Cons: being picky. May be too advanced for home users. It took me a decent amount of time to learn RouterOS and set it up properly with port forwarding etc. It has limited memory and processing power, so it can't hold much more than what's built in. that would explain the lack of direct access as it wouldn't be of much use. I wouldn't build in too much cache or DNS lookup. I just used an external system for dnsmasq and squid. RouterOS can cache and use the parent cache, but it can be the throttling itself. No SSH, but there is a terminal with RouterOS commands. I wish it was 10Gbe ;) Internet speed doesn't seem to hit 1Gbps like Edgemax used to. This may be because there are too many ports on the same board sharing bandwidth. There's nothing wrong with being stuck at 800Mbps. Overall happy with it and happy to get rid of Edgemax. Will definitely buy RouterOS in the future.

Pros
  • understandable for the old
Cons
  • Some little things
