There are two types of HMB (hydroxymethylbutyrate): the calcium salt form and the free acid form. The calcium salt form can be found in this Met-Rx brand and similar brands like the ON (Optimum Nutrition) brand; This is found in most tablet forms. The fairy acid form is found in MuscleTech's Clear Muscle LIQUID tablets. MuscleTech claims their product is backed by a 12-week university study. That's right. The current results of the study can be found on the National Institutes of Health website. In addition, the title of the study is "Effect of 12 weeks of beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate free acid on muscle mass, strength, and performance in weight-training subjects." The key word here is free acid. MuscleTech duplicates this free acid form of HMB, but this product and most other brands of HMB tablets are not; They use a form of calcium salt and this is stated on the label of these products. So far I haven't found any HMB pills or tablets that use the free acid form of HMB, with the exception of MuscleTech. In fact, MuscleTech's patented BetaTor is a "pure, free acid form of HMB." The purpose of this review is to inform you that if you purchase this Met-Rx HMB product instead of the MuscleTech Clear Pill product as a cheaper version, you are purchasing the wrong product. They are not the same SMB, are not equivalent, and do not produce the same expected effects. I don't trust MuscleTech as a company but ClearMuscle tablets are what they claim and will improve protein synthesis while the calcium salt form of HMB does not. As explained on the website of Examine, the independent and unbiased encyclopedia of supplements and nutrition, "Pre-workout HMB supplementation requires the use of HMB free acid, not a calcium salt." Keyword again: free acid. HMB calcium salts are used to make various purees that prevent muscle breakdown, which is why they are used in diseases like AIDS. It can also be used to "dry out" athletes who are on a calorie deficit diet while following a physical training program. However, to actually increase protein synthesis or gain, and not just prevent muscle breakdown, you must be using the free acid form of HMB. I'm hoping to find a supplement soon that's cheaper and clearer than MuscleTech's Clear Muscle so I can stop paying the premium for the shiny silver bottle it comes in, but I haven't found one yet. The bottom line is this product does not deliver the same HMB used by Clear Muscle or HMB in a 12 week study showing results. Read the study, read about HMB on Examine and then decide. I was not paid for this review and did not receive any free or discounted products. I just hope you don't accidentally buy the wrong product (wrong HMB).
