There just isn't enough space.

I had to take the product photos to heart. You cannot put two standard bottles of spice in a row. Such a waste of space. If manufacturing made the shelf only 1/2 inch deep, the spice rack would be much more useful and wouldn't waste as much space. If you have small counters and are trying to optimize space, look elsewhere.
