Review on ๐Ÿ”ฅ Efficient Shop Vac: 8 Gallon High-Efficiency Disposable Collection System by John Hall

Revainrating 4 out of 5

OK, with restrictions.

Having bought a nice new shop vac, I didn't want to ruin the engine by vacuuming out the finer plaster than the one I found in the attic of my (very old) house, run off was dust created when the old walls were torn off boards and plaster. I knew I needed a HEPA filter to catch something like this, but no matter what I looked like, it seemed like an extremely expensive option. Enter high performance bags that filter out fine dust, reduce stress on the cartridge filter and (hopefully) mean I won't be buying another shop vac when mine is only a few weeks old. The bag works well, with a few caveats. It sucks clean and judging by what's blowing out of my shop vac's exhaust, it catches almost anything that's sucked up. For reference, when I tear down the walls, the dust hangs in the air for several hours. When I come in a few hours later to vacuum out what I couldn't catch and stuff it into build bags, the Shop-Vac shows no sign of dust being blown out of its opening. So there is a big plus. The main disadvantage is that the strength of the unit counteracts it. Plaster dust is heavy and you won't get about 8 gallons of material before the weight of the dust starts tearing the bag apart. Once this happens the bag starts tearing, the dust being sucked into the shop vac isn't collected as efficiently which means a lot of bad things. The cartridge filter then has to rise to the challenge, and what it doesn't catch is sucked into the engine. This is bad for the Shop-Vac's durability. It's easy enough to handle, basically just empty the bag before it gets heavy enough to be difficult to move. The bag won't be full, but they're cheap enough to be more or less disposable and cheaper to actively manage bag usage than buying a new shop vac. It's probably too late for those reading this to make that particular decision, but had I known then what I know now I would have seriously considered a smaller shop vac rather than an 8 gallon unit, which I can't fully use because it's going to be so difficult. Update March 2018 Still very happy with the bags but be aware you lose a lot of benefits if you use a hose that doesn't go in the hole. I used a hose from another industrial vacuum so I could use a basic dust collector and a lot of fine dust got into the vacuum. This clogged the filter and I lost a lot of suction power and no doubt some fine dust was blown out of the vents. A new vacuum cleaner hose with a deflector inside the bag solves this problem. No problem with the bag itself, hence the 4 star rating, but if fine dust is allowed to get into the filter before it even gets into the HEPA bag, you lose a lot of the HEPA bag's usefulness.
