I used to have string lights on the rafters of my eaves to provide a dim light for my backyard patio. The problem was that they weren't automatic, used more power, and were a point light source (distracting). I removed the black cap from these lamps, installed them in a well between the rafters and hooked them up to the low voltage lighting controller. It gives a nice diffused light, is part of the low voltage backyard lighting (automatic) and consumes very little energy.
