Works with Mac Mini 2018 but requires power

I used to have a Mac Mini (pre 2018) with built in Mini DisplayPort connected to a 24" Apple LED Cinema Display. When I replaced the Mac Mini I still wanted to use it .Display so I grabbed this adapter and just received it today.I plugged it into one of the Thunderbolt3/USB-C ports on the back of my new Mac Mini and the display showed nothing. Then I added USB-C (I also have a 2016 15" MacBook Pro) and the display started working (as expected) when turned on. Disconnect the power, stop working. My guess is that the Thunderbolt3/USB-C ports on the back of the new MacMini aren't powering the ships in the adapter. (By the way, I also connected the display to a MacBook Pro via an adapter and it worked great without an external power supply.) As for the product itself, the case is quite nice, with etched and polished edges and a deep dark color to match well with the new Mac Mini. I don't often recommend products, but this was a nice addition to my adapter arsenal.

Pros
  • Supports display resolutions up to 4096 x 2160 @ 60Hz with 24-bit color; transmits both video and audio, compatible with displays, monitors and projectors with a Mini DisplayPort connector. Requires Mini Displayport cable
Cons
  • Some small things
