Great alternative to the $90 OEM switch replacement!

Worth every penny! ($90.00 price mentioned was OEM at dealer, last time I replaced it I couldn't find an aftermarket switch. Unlike now) Great alternative to replace the tailgate release switch if the switch still works, but the rubber cover has almost melted. I have a 2007 4Runner and replaced the derailleur twice before finding this item due to the degraded melted rubber. The OEM switch at Toyota from what I recall was about $90 including tax (switch only, not installed), the reviewed replacement cover was less than $10 and fits perfectly. I installed it about 3 weeks ago so time will tell, I don't know why the OEM cap is melting the way it is, I just blamed it on the Texas summer but it seems to be happening across the country. At $90 for a new Switch and that $10 cover, if it only lasts a year or two, it's worth five stars, $10, and time to replace. Since I'm giving the car to my daughter next semester, I'll update the post so you know how it's holding up. The reseller claims you can replace the cover with the switch built in, although this is true it takes some time and patience to remove the melted cover from the case and switch plate. The actual release button or switch plate is a fairly flimsy piece of plastic and can be easily damaged if you scrape it off with too much force with a tool, and if you don't remove it completely the cover won't stay in place. Place. It is best to remove the switch from the tailgate and carefully remove the rubber band. Sound scary? It's not, in fact you can get it in less than 30 minutes. All you need is a plastic body panel removal tool kit (cheap, available here at Revain), a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive (shallow or deep but shallow), a 1 /4" ratchet with #2 6" extension Phillips screwdriver and 10mm wrench. Step One: Open the tailgate, KEEP THE WINDOW CLOSED! Step 2: Disconnect the negative battery terminal with a 10mm wrench. tailgate, then use a 10mm ratchet to loosen the screw that secures the strap. This is not a reinstall orientation. Step 4: Use a wide panel removal tool (1.5-2 inch), gently insert the tool between the panel, and lift the latch at the bottom right or left corner after inserting, you will get one Feel the stretch, so slowly rock the Panel tool to start releasing the clips. The tighter the tension, the closer you are to the lip pad, and if you press hard, the clips will loosen, just don't press, you will feel it. After loosening the first clip you can keep the gap open and start working around the tailgate trim and the clips will easily release. When the bottom of the board is free, start working on the sides, 2 clips on each side and 6 clips on the bottom. If this is your first time doing this, either have someone help you support the panel once the clips are loose, or use masking tape and tape the underside of the panel to the tailgate so it doesn't fall on your head . After the clips are removed, do not pull the panel straight down, you need to grab the bottom of the panel with one hand and place your other hand on the top side or window side of the panel and gently push up to make sure it is off the Tailgate removed and should be completely clear of 4Runner. Step 5: Slowly remove the plastic moisture barrier from the elevator door, do not throw it away! Step Six: The latch assembly is actually part of the chrome/black 4Runner badge on the overhead gate and will need to be removed. Disconnect the (grey) wire harness next to the switch, it's easy to see. Then disconnect the lock cylinder (it's keyed so it can only be fitted one way). Step 7: When the gate is up to the stop, look inside and find the nuts that attach to the 4Runner badge, it there maybe 5 of these 6 depending on the model year 2 is on the lock barrel and 1 next to it and 2 in the center of the emblem Remaining nut Now look at the tailgate you will see some round black plugs these are plugs for access to hard-to-reach parts. Find the matching plug for that nut and pry it out with a flat head screwdriver or fairing tool. They are very easy to remove. Now that you've figured out what's holding the badge in place, take a 10 -mm socket, a ratchet and a 6" extension and remove all nuts described. Depending on the model year you may have a trim clip g At the top of the Toyota logo (badge) and clips on both sides. Use your fairing tool and gently pry them off and the whole assembly comes out. The assembly consists of the chrome plaque, switch assembly, license plate light and key barrel all in one piece. Step Eight: Flip over the badge or chrome knot you just removed. find switch. Using your #2 Phillip, remove the 2 screws, pop out the switch assembly and start removing the melted rubber. I used rubber gloves when cleaning the stock as rubber doesn't wash off easily. Wiping the scraper and other tools with denatured alcohol also helped me, it helped a little. Attach a new cover. Of course. Warning. The switch plate (the plastic cover covering the button that the black rubber cap fits onto) is fairly fragile so handle it carefully and when it comes out of the case it's easy to put back on. .Afterwards follow these instructions in reverse order, do not overtighten the badge, a drop of BLUE Loctite on the threads and a snug fit is all you need. When you start replacing the panel, don't forget to insert the window side into the groove, it will hang by itself letting you know it's in place. Then gently press the plate into place with your palm, you will feel the latches engage. (TIP: Once the panel is in the top slot, line up the bottom corner holes with the panel clips and snap into place, then finish the sides and finish with the bottom.) The job is very easy if you do so If you're new to it, slow down, don't let that intimidate you, and think about the money you'll save instead of spending at the dealer. I am very happy with the cover, wish I had known sooner!
