I think it's a great bio-environment although it's overpriced considering it's just pumice. You'll never need to replace it, so bite the bullet and just buy one. However, I don't understand why I read reviews that said someone's aquarium water became clear after use? This provides biological filtration rather than mechanical filtration and therefore neutralizes ammonia and nitrite released from fish waste and rotting feed. Sponges, filter mats and filter threads keep the water clean.
