Day & Dark Readable

I should have known better. Even though I knew it wasn't going to be an airplane HUD, I still had hope. This HUD (HUD-M12) works in either GPS mode or OBD II mode. I've only used OBD II so I can't comment on how well the GPS mode works. The "installation" is very easy, so I'll get straight to the heart of the report: the display. I was interested in seeing the altitude, distance, time and speed. Unfortunately, you're stuck with a relatively large tachometer that you can't remove, compass initials that are really too small to read quickly, very clear speedometers and a clear clock. I'm not sure if the altimeter can be replaced with another display or if it's only available on the GPS display. I first plugged it in at night and really liked the head-up display right in the middle of my field of view. It was very similar to the airplane HUD, except the letters and numbers doubled vertically. Unfortunately, strong daylight has washed out the display. I then set it up to be projected onto the supplied film. The problem with film is that it's not transparent, so you can't get it in your field of view. Film had the advantage of completing duplicate letters and numbers and making the display readable in the broadest daylight. Luckily the M12 got the time right and the mph figure was displayed within 1 mph of the car's speedometer. However, if I had to use the setup buttons on the M12, I'd be in trouble. They are on the windshield of the showcase. You can't see them to install them. I feel like I haven't really improved my ability to access vehicle data because the display can't be placed in plain sight. If I was 18 again I would think that would be really cool, but then I'm far from 18. The HUD-M12 has been working fine for 3 days and I don't know what to expect for the price. I think what I don't like at all is the use of the film and what is shown. I absolutely don't need to lose 1/3 of the gauge to the tachometer. Apparently all manufacturers of ILS insist on a wheelbarrow. The Acadia that installed this and every other car I've owned in the last 10 years came with it. The best I can say is that the film allows you to read the displayed data both in the sun and in the dark.
