Blu-ray vs Roku XD - Cable Dish Replacement - hulu

ray player and the roku xd device to replace our Uverse TV plan. I was trying to decide on one device and read the reviews for both. We have a network in our house so I didn't have to worry about Wi-Fi issues. I increased the download speed to 12 MB. I first got the roku xd, set it up with Hulu Plus and was amazed at the quality. Once I was happy with roku and hulu plus, I realized I might need a different device for my other TV. After some research I decided on the s380 as the second device. This is my first Blu-ray and it only costs about $30. I was also hoping that it would play avchd files and other files from the hard drive. Installation was pretty easy. The only problem I had was getting the Media Remote Android app to work. I still haven't gotten it to work. Tried with Galax Tab, Evo and Epic. Everything else worked. On Hulu Plus, the Roku UI is more responsive, so I usually take my turn and start the show from there. I have a Roku account set up on both devices, so I can only use one stream at a time. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm pretty sure I get an error message, when I try to use 2 threads. Then I tried to play different files from the hard drive. There is a limit to the number of subfolders it can display, but it was able to play my avchd files. Sometimes I get an error when reading a file, but I think it's a problem reading the end of some videos. Nowadays I can easily transfer my avchd files to a hard drive, connect the hard drive to Sony and watch home videos. I also tried making some xvid files from some of the Dora DVDs we have. Sony was also able to play these files, making it easier for the wife and kids to watch their shows without having to switch DVDs once I find time to convert them. I was also able to copy folders from a homemade DVD. to the hard drive and Sony played the vob files. The DVDs were created with a lightweight DVD burner. Now I have all my home videos in one place, making playback and backup easy. I'm very impressed with all the files it can play, in addition to being a Blu-ray player and video streamer. My next test will be with the Revain video to see how both devices work. So far I'm happy with Sony and Rock. The choice of which one to get depends on your needs. Reviews have mentioned issues with this Sony and Wi-Fi, so I'd be wary. Roku has built-in WiFi. If I were to buy just one, I would go with the Sony for the added features when I could connect it to a non-Wi-Fi network. The extra files it supports and the Blu-ray player are worth the $30 difference to me. If you don't need another Blu-ray player or don't want to play other files, Roku is cheaper with built-in Wi-Fi. Pros
  • The free downloadable Media Remote app for your iPhone, iPad or Android phone turns it into a universal remote control
Cons
  • So far so good
