Tip for new turtle owners

So you want a turtle. Congratulations on purchasing one of nature's finest poop machines! You may have realized that you need a bathing area and filtration, which led you to this product page here. So the question is, can this filter handle your little defecation wizard? I use it, but only for hatchlings. This filter will never be enough to deal with an adult turtle's massive fecal attack, and don't expect it either. However, I still recommend some modifications for your children's toys. First, throw out those charcoal inserts, because honestly, how much poop do you think these flimsy little things can actually hold? Instead, I use polyfilter pads tailored for the pump and waterfall and fill the rest of the filter with Biomedia lava rock to breed beneficial bacteria that will chew on your turtle's digestive byproducts. Polyfilter pads turn brown from the crap they filter when they need to be changed, and you need to do this at least once a month. While we're talking about feces, I'm going to give you some advice. Your little asshole is perfectly capable of emptying itself in sufficient quantity for this filter. Your turtle is not alone, don't get extra turtles (at least in the same tank) or nature's other truly terrible fecal machine, the goldfish. Or anything else that can handle the crap this filter has to handle because it can only handle so much crap (like the rest of us). And don't expect this to be a permanent solution, as hatchlings will quickly outgrow any small aquarium they are placed in. To be honest, use it and whatever ten or twenty gallon aquarium you have only long enough to build a pond. or a much larger aquarium, as that is how long it will take your turtle to outgrow the house that the filter is in. So what do I think of this product? Great for a very temporary fix for hatched turtles. But what is the permanent solution? To quote Mr. Horse from Ren and Stimpy, "No sir, I don't like it." But this filter isn't really designed to solve the turtle problem permanently, so don't expect it. And no, I'm not kidding about poop. Your tortoise is really stuffed with iced tea and honey. But you will know.
