Review on Ultimate Music Experience with ELAC Discovery Music Server by Tim Duncan

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Very good sound, nice interface, but needs a lot of work

I bought the Elac DS-S101-G server about two months ago, and in the first month I was tempted to return it for almost a penny . Daily. Some of the reviews here practically encouraged a possible return, which made me very skeptical of the server's capabilities or longevity in my home. I finally figured out how to deal with the constant connection issues and now I really enjoy using it. Initially I had a problem with shutting down the server without using local storage. After contacting Elac, they sent me a replacement power supply. The DS-S101-G uses a $15 Ktec power adapter (12.0V, 2.0A). After first watching Hans Beekhuizen's YouTube videos on the 1.7 Roon Essentials update and the new Unlimited Library feature, I downloaded about 93,000 files using a directly attached 5TB WD Passport drive and then closed two different powered USB hubs (Anker and Sabrent). The DS-S101-G supplies 500mA to attached storage devices, and it seems most powered USB hubs don't exceed that current limit either, so plugging a powered USB hub into a hard drive didn't work for me. Later I switched to Samsung T5 2TB SSD. a disk with about 90,000 files connected directly to the server, with similar constant interruptions during the process of integrating storage files. The server was still unusable when connected to local storage. Finally, after simply selecting albums and files that cannot be found on Qobuz and Tidal, the server is absolutely stable with 17,480 local storage files and continues to run without any failures. It seems to me that Roon Essentials 1.7 has stability issues when the library reaches a certain number of files with DS-S101-G - Linux OS, and the file capacity is definitely not unlimited, to say the least. I'll be happy if it stays stable at 30,000 files, which is Roon Essentials' original limit. I may experiment and add more files in the future, but for now I'm very happy and satisfied. The sound is great, Roon's interface is very intuitive and pleasant to use, and access to your local library as well as Tidal and Qobuz gives you a wide range of music to choose from.
