I bought a Buffalo LinkStation SoHo 2-Bay Desktop 8TB for two purposes. Firstly as a vault for rarely used documents and photos and secondly as a backup solution for Time Machine backups. This is achieved by setting user/group quotas on individually created shared folders. Not the best solution, but okay. Once the quota is reached, any process attempting to continue effectively fails. Is the user notified of a threshold violation? Despite what the user manual says, the LinkStation does not support email notifications of quota violations. Buffalo support says this is available with the more expensive version of the TeraStation. Does the UI show the disk space used by each shared folder or user/group? No, only at a higher level of the shared space array. To get to the Public Folders level, you'll need to dive into the Finder or run commands from a terminal session. It took some effort to find out that Time Machine backups work and all general purpose files are available. things that work. The sleep timer works well. Can be slow to be fully available so set waking up a little earlier than necessary. UPS backup power support. The quick test gave a warning and the LinkStation shut down after the timeout. Direct copy from UPS device. As far as I can tell, it's all or nothing. If more files are added after a direct copy operation, new and old files are copied to a new directory with the current date. The direct copy can be started via the user interface or via the function button on the back of the device. Not the best location. Summary. I haven't tried any of the advanced features like web access, active directory, iTunes server, etc. I do not need these functions from this device. Two stars for the LinkStation overall plus one added for the responsiveness of the Buffalo support contacted multiple times. After spending 3 weeks on it I'll probably keep it to myself rather than start the whole discovery process over with something else. Note. It took over 52 hours to erase all data and factory reset the device. If you are thinking of returning a device, please plan accordingly. The time to complete the estimates was extremely accurate. So why can't it tell me how much disk space a shared folder or user is using?
