Review on πŸ… Weck 742 Mold Jar - .5 Liter, Set of 6: Perfect Glass Storage Solution for Preserving Homemade Foods by Phillip Ellis

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great starter glasses!

These 0.5L Weck Jars can have many other good uses, but I bought mine specifically for making and storing sourdough. I have tried several glasses from other manufacturers. These jars are superior to others for the following reasons: 1. These Weck jars have straight walls without an inturned "shoulder" near the neck of the jar where sourdough and flour splashes tend to build up in indirect-walled jars to accumulate and cause bacterial contamination, making cleaning difficult and reducing visibility. 2. These jugs have straight sides, but they are not in the shape of a right cylinder but of an inverted truncated cone: the neck of the jug is much wider than the bottom of the jug. The result is a jar whose contents (such as water, flour, and leaven) are easier to pour directly onto the bottom, eliminating spills and splashes on the interior walls. A woman's fist would easily fit some straight-walled cylindrical vessels, but not my hand or the hand of most grown men. With these Weck jugs, I have no trouble getting in and wiping down the inside of the jugs so that the contents of the jugs are always clearly visible: a very desirable quality.3. The 0.5 liter volume is a good compromise - the best I've come across - for making and storing starter: not so big that it takes up valuable fridge storage space, but not so small as to be impractical either limited starter amounts can be vaccinated and developed over time.4. The price is reasonable: not too cheap but very reasonable in my opinion. You can't defeat them. If you find something that you think is best suited for this purpose, please let me and the rest of the world know.
