Review on Wilson Electronics Lightning Surge Protector for 75 Ohm F-Female Connections by John Duffield

Don't install a Cellular Booster System without one of these.

If you are installing an antenna outside of your home or other building you will need a surge arrester and this product is exactly that. To be clear, they do not protect against a direct lightning strike, but they do protect against electromagnetic energy generated when a lightning strike occurs in close proximity (within a radius of several miles) to the antenna. A direct lightning strike will destroy the antenna and electronic devices with or without surge arresters. A lightning strike in the antenna area creates a strong electromagnetic field, which the antenna picks up and converts into electrical energy, which is then transmitted down the coaxial cable. to the electronics in the amplifier. Without a spark gap, the electricity generated by the impact can burn out electronic components. This is a 75 ohm surge arrester and should be used with 75 ohm coax cables and 75 ohm antennas. The surge arrester has "F" jacks, which are common coaxial connectors used for television antennas and cable television. If you have a 50 ohm amplification system, do not use this product - a 75 ohm arrester in a 50 ohm system will cause large signal loss and prevent use of an amplifier. These surge arresters are easy to install, just connect the antenna coax cable to one side and the other coax cable to the amplifier on the other side. Then connect the ground wire to the surge arrester's ground terminal and run it to the ground rod or cold water pipe where it enters the building, whichever is closest (it's important that the ground wire be as short and direct as possible). I have this from Wilson Electronics - DB Pro - Cell Phone Signal Booster for Large Home or Office - Includes Revain directional antenna and the system really works. See my review of the booster system on this webpage.
