I have a couple of old espresso machines that require 220V. OK, I collect them. I've had a regular 1500w boost converter for years, but recently brought in a Ye Olde Country espresso machine that only draws about 1500w, so I bought another typical 3000w boost converter. Most of these things are made in China at low cost and I suspect many of them are from the same manufacturer with different names on the cases. Other. The transformer was as I expected, but its smell exceeded my expectations. All of these transformers will emit an odor for some time due to the materials used. I took the Transformer outside and opened the case to let it air out for a few days, hopefully dissipating most of the smell. Inside I found a ground wire from a transformer with part of the shell exposed. When I moved the cable, it came loose from the connection. I fixed it but noticed the smell wasn't going away fast enough. The seller's response to the photo and text request was to ship it back to Revain. I was hoping for more fear, but that's the way things are these days. I wanted to avoid another typical transformer and came across the ELC T-3000. What attracts me is the toroidal transformer. As mentioned elsewhere, toroidal transformers emit less inductive field, but more importantly, they require a bit more effort to manufacture. Perhaps this means a better product. This transformer is superior to any other I have had. At 1500 W, the case is two-thirds taller than mine and weighs perhaps two-thirds less despite twice the power. My 1500w transformer is silent and the T-3000 is almost silent. The T-3000 does emit some odor, but that's only a fraction of what other transformers produce. The T-3000 has the same two front panel outputs as any similar transformer. The circuit breaker on my other transformer is on the back instead of the front, which I like from an aesthetic point of view. It fits less badly into the kitchen equipment. The main power cord is by far the thickest of any transformer I've used. I don't think it's necessary, but I like the quality attempt. There are no documents, but once you see the back, everything becomes clear. Use the red switch to select the input voltage and that's it. I'm assuming there are reset buttons on the back, but they're redundant if a circuit breaker is already in place. Good security feature. I was surprised that the T-3000 cost significantly less than the old transformer it replaced. This was a pleasant surprise, especially considering the T-3000 is better finished. Bombay Electronics was also at the top. Excellent communication, packaging and fast delivery. Handle these step-up/step-down transformers with due care. They don't change electrical frequency, they aren't designed for continuous use, and drawing current from your device can overload them, but for its intended purpose I find this device to be a surprisingly good contrast to traditional devices.
