Simon's cafe was fine

This cafe was more complex than the other two sets I put together (the library and the bedroom with blue deer wallpaper). There were some things that just couldn't be made like stool legs, a table and coffee mugs. I've found ways to get around this, but it was annoying. (I cut out the legs and just glued the stools to the floor, I used mini coffee mugs bought from Revain and the table just looks bad). A piece of wood for the piano is warped and cannot be repaired. It is on the front of the piano next to the keys, making the piano look askew. Each cabinet had to be wrapped in paper to look like wood grain. The paper is like fine sandpaper and does not fold easily. I had to erase the instructions from it and just cut and glue all the pieces onto paper before assembling the cabinets and shelves. If this was my first miniature I'd probably stop halfway and never get back to it. When I first started, it helped to know the general concept behind these minis. The instructions were in English although not always clear. They claim to connect the brown and white wires on the battery except the wire is black not brown. There are pictures of the parts needed for each step and sometimes this shows a picture of thin copper wire but indicates that thick black wire is used. Based on past experience, some reading between the lines was required. I had little things that weren't in the instructions. Luckily the wiring wasn't as complicated as the wiring in the library. All in all, this is the least enjoyable of the three I've made and I couldn't wait to finish it so I wouldn't have to work on it again. I wouldn't recommend it as a gift unless the person has experience with these kits.

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
