This is the fourth year in a row that I have purchased live caterpillars from Insect Lore. They are such a great gift for kids. I use them in my class with special needs students to study the life cycle. Students enjoy watching the transformation and then releasing butterflies. This is easy as the caterpillars have enough to eat before turning into pupae. First, I never keep a habitat for butterflies because butterflies always secrete a red liquid when born from pupae. I love that this updated kit has a clear lid on the habitat to make it easier to see what's inside. I never use the feeder as I only give them oranges and strawberries. Be careful with caterpillar cups as the pupae may fall off when the cup is shaken. This is a great project for kids of all ages. Even adults are surprised to see butterflies. It takes a little over a month for everything to hatch and be free.
