Review on πŸ”§ Enhance Precision with Whiteside Machine 9800 Brass Set Up Gauge Blocks by Bill Russett

Good enough for most woodwork but not for precision work

I bought these gauges last December and hung them on my workbench in the zip pouch that came with them. I've used them several times for woodworking and they work great. However, I never thought to verify their accuracy. After reading some reviews that spoke of measurement inaccuracies, I thought I should pull out the digital calipers and take a closer look. My results are similar to some other reviewers. That means they're not perfect, but good enough for the vast majority of woodworking projects. If you want maximum precision, this isn't for you. There are the following inaccuracies or inconsistencies with the set I received: 1. The sides are not the same width. In other words, if you measure the width of one side and then measure the adjacent side, you'll get different measurements. (See attached comparison photo for thin and wide side measurements)2. All of the probes in my kit have a small burr on the end, probably due to a machining/cutting process that causes the ends to be slightly wider than the middle. (See attached comparison photo for 1/2 inch finish and center gauge measurements) 3. The width of the bars will vary slightly when measured at different positions along the length of each gauge. 4. Gauge 3/16" My set has ridges running the full length of the gauge, end to end, on 3 of the 4 sides. (See attached photo which shows a closeup of the ridges) Now that I've meticulously As I've marked to within 1000ths of an inch I'm still okay with the accuracy of this set. I'm not a precision mechanic. As mentioned above, they're good enough for just about any woodworking job I can think of. I'll be careful to remove the burrs from the Remove ends now that I know they are there This improves accuracy Overall I find them worthwhile for the price As a carpenter they get 4 stars, as a locksmith I would give them 2.5 to 3 stars BTW have I moved my workbench and wanted a better way to store and hang these sensors so I 3D printed them Bracket shown in the two photos It hangs on a standard breadboard and stands al rope. If you want to 3D print it, the object file can be found and downloaded (free). Search"Measuring device holder (5 pcs.) - freestanding and hanging"
