Review on ๐Ÿ›ถ Hull-a-Port Thule Rooftop Kayak Carrier by Karoly Reddick

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good solution but there are some problems.

While visiting my local sporting goods store recently, my wife and I decided to invest in a pair of kayaks. However, this meant that the search for a way to transport them continued. I got home straight away and started searching the internet for roof rack systems and after about a week of internal discussions, measurements and site after site after site I decided to contact Thule. I also went with the Hull-A-Port 834 because most reviews looked great, it was reasonably priced and felt pretty solid. I chose to order from Revain because Thule couldn't give me an exact arrival date and I needed them to collect my kayaks. That being said, I was a little disappointed when Revane told me it would be about a week before I received my order. However, I was pleasantly surprised when they got to me 5 days early. So here are the pros and cons of this setup. Plastic. - When we lifted the kayaks and finally strapped everything down properly, the kayaks didn't move an inch. - The included straps (to put the body of the kayaks) are strong and easy to use. - The included cushion top is made of high-quality nylon and protects the bottom of the kayak from rubbing against metal. Once attached to the roof they become quite durable. (Maybe I got hit by a car with a low suspension beam and they took a small hit without hurting themselves or my roof rack or my roof, HORRIBLE!). Cons - Directions are not very informative. - If you use them with the Aeroblade, you must purchase the Xadapter11, which costs an additional $25 per pair. They are difficult to screw into the Aeroblade due to the position of the screws. With the supplied hex key (which has a special head and is therefore indispensable) you can only turn a quarter. Since they don't fold, you also have to go through the tedious screwing process. them to the roof rack and back every time you need them, or you should hope you're not going anywhere with low ground clearance. The included ropes for the front and back of the kayaks are a bit of a hassle to tie. to the front and back of your vehicle. The material they are made of does not allow for a good knot and they feel a bit flimsy. I will most likely replace it with a higher quality Thule strap before going any distance. That being said, I think it's a great solution for my needs, but if I had to do it again I'd probably jump to the more expensive ones, which fold up when not in use. However, they do their job well.

Pros
  • Built to last, with anti-corrosive coating and hardware
Cons
  • Almost never
