Thule cheaper again

Would be perfect IF the screws holding it in place were longer. As short as they are (1) turned a 10 minute job into a 30 minute job (2) not long enough if you want to put a bolt + stop bolt and not the buttons they send. I ended up doing that so they wouldn't be able to escape so easily.

Pros
  • Thick all weather pads for maximum kayak protection
Cons
  • Outer

The carrier is fine. It is simply attached to the frame with nuts.

The media itself is fine. It simply attaches to the luggage rack with nuts that can be hand tightened. The straps that attach the kayak to the trunk are a bit confusing at first, but once you figure out where they go and how to tighten them, you're good to go.

Pros
  • Dimensions: 20.3 x 7.7 x 15.1 inches
Cons
  • Vulgarity

Installation headache

I have used Yakima products for many years and they are very convenient to use. We installed some Thule racks on our new Outback and bought kayak racks. Oh my god what a complete pain to install. The bolts are almost too short and the wing nuts are difficult to work with. Took me 45 minutes to put them on. I almost decided not to kayak because I was so frustrated with the wasted time.

Pros
  • Powerful and easy to use roof rack for a kayak
Cons
  • Volume

Built to last with quality materials. Bought.

Made with high quality materials to be durable. First I bought an older version (lower clamp with 2 bolts and 2 rivets) which was adjusted from a local shop and came with a pulley ratchet on the bow and stern connections and was easy to adjust on a hot day. Raise or cool the kayak. I then bought the 834 version (upgraded 4 bolt floor clamp) which is identical in shape (stand itself, not floor clamp) and the mounting hole patterns are exactly what I was hoping for because I had the 4 adaptersโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Thule buckle bumper protects kayak and vehicle from scratches
Cons
  • Slim

The trunk itself is excellent. Easy to install, very stable and the design allows you to add another set of racks for two kayaks on the roof. The only downside for me is the straps that came with the rack were too short for my 34 inch tandem kayak. The straps are only 9 feet long so I was only 2-3 feet short. Maybe my kayaks are bigger (?) but I can't see how the straps that come with them will fit any 34 inch kayak. Unfortunately, Thule doesn't make longer straps, so you'll need to invest inโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Angled design provides stability and compact design.
Cons
  • Available in black only.

Good product, TERRIBLE SUPPLIER AND CUSTOMER SERVICE

This order was a disaster from the start. I made the mistake of ordering this product in a hurry thinking I'd order Thule Hula A Port Aero. So this is my fault. When I tried to return the item, I was told that there would be a fee for the return. After thinking about it, I decided to try the product and if it works, keep it. When I opened the box, which had a huge amount of tape around the edges, I saw some of the parts in ziplock bags and they were in use. This added to my frustration as thisโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Fits Thule shelving, round bar and most factory shelving
Cons
  • Not bad

Good solution but there are some problems.

While visiting my local sporting goods store recently, my wife and I decided to invest in a pair of kayaks. However, this meant that the search for a way to transport them continued. I got home straight away and started searching the internet for roof rack systems and after about a week of internal discussions, measurements and site after site after site I decided to contact Thule. I also went with the Hull-A-Port 834 because most reviews looked great, it was reasonably priced and felt prettyโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Built to last, with anti-corrosive coating and hardware
Cons
  • Almost never
