Review on ๐Ÿ”ง Derale 13090 Transmission Filter Kit: Enhance Performance and Prolong Transmission Lifespan by Quintin Boner

Revainrating 5 out of 5

I wish I had done it years ago!

I have a 1999 Ford F-250 Super Duty with a 5.4 engine and a 4R100 transmission. I've owned it since December 2003. I wish I had many years ago. First, the tubing included in the kit is 5/16 ID. With 3/8 spikes and a fluid line I didn't want to struggle putting it together so I went to an auto parts store and bought a larger hose. Not 3/8, but between 5/16 and 3/8. 32.11. Second, do yourself a favor and skip the thread tape, go to the hardware store and buy TFE paste from Master Plumber. (does not damage seals or valves). Withstands pressures up to 10,000 psi, temperatures from -50 to 500 degrees. It is compatible with water, steam, natural gas, LPG, oils, fuels and dilute acids. Apply to the threads, collect and leave on overnight as an additional measure. Note that it never dries out completely. Third, the Derale filter is 21 microns. Some people suggest finer microns, like 15 or even 10 microns. Transmission oil is not a hydraulic fluid. If so, you could just use any hydraulic fluid. Just like a limited-slip (rear) differential, which must have an artificial additive, automatic transmissions have a clutch disc that requires artificial components in the fluid to function properly. The micron will filter out those components, Derale says. Stick to 21 microns. If you have space and want to use a larger filter, do your research. I chose Wix 51515 XP. It's 5 inches tall, has the same bypass valve setting (8-11 psi), same maximum flow rate (7-9 gpm), and is 21 microns. PS, the hose fittings are NOT plastic, they are black anodized aluminum.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Some bugs
