Update: We have just returned from a trip where it rained for about 5 hours. Everything in the bag was wet. Not slightly wet, but completely wet. Most of our belongings were secured in hard luggage but one of our gym bags got wet and everything inside got wet too. We have about 5 reliable uses for this bag including in the rain but we won't be using it again. I pay for a hard case. Overall I am very happy with this bag. We took it on a long trip and it easily fit two golf bags, a large suitcase, a small suitcase and a holdall. We rode in the rain both while driving and on the way home. At the exit everything seems to be fine. We arrived at our destination to find that part of the inner lining had ripped (I don't know how it happened, we didn't have anything sharp). But everything was dry. When we got home we noticed that some of our clothes were a bit damp. If it wasn't for that, I would definitely give 5 stars!
