I am upstairs and the catcher is downstairs and it works great.
I have not used it long enough to comment on the battery life. A little pricey but if you really want a leg up on catching pokemon, I would recommend investing in one. I just stared using it today and so far I am very satisfied. The rang on this is really good. I am upstairs and the gotcha is downstairs and it's catching.
