After reading the many reviews here you will decide that buying this item is risky. Also, I've read tons of negative reviews about firmware, software, etc. All I can say is that my experience is anything but negative. And vice versa. I've never been so thrilled with a radio amateur under $100. I updated the firmware to the latest version before programming. I'm new to DMR but not new to amateur radio. However, the intimidation factor when setting up a DMR radio was high. People seem to complain about "code stubs" and the general difficulty of setting up and operating radios. For GD77 I recommend watching a video on creating a codeplug. The process is painless and lots of information is available online. I can't believe people are complaining about this. I literally set up the hotspot in less time than it took to watch the entire video. Get Digital, FM, Dual Band HT here. No frills, simple program, works great. When the radio first came out there might have been a lot of problems, but I literally had no problems. From updating the firmware to communicating in the Brandmeister network, everything ran smoothly. I had a problem: Updating the radio with DMR userids seems a bit useless. The ID list includes more than 90,000 people and the radio contains 10,000 IDs. Also, I got errors with the list I downloaded from DMR-MARC. It could also be me since I'm a newbie. A popular review here complains about the quality of the RX. Maybe that person has a bad radio, but I have a great one. Mine hears distant repeaters which my FT1D can't hear on FM.
