. My router and printer were recently destroyed by a thunderstorm. We have a UPS for power, but it looks like lightning struck the cable line and burned the ethernet ports on the devices (the cable modem was somehow unaffected). I looked at cable line surge protectors but saw mixed reviews. A surge of current from a cable line cannot travel through the fiber. In the worst case, the modem and cheap converter can burn out. So far everything works great. My internet connection is 150m/s and mine is about 170m/s so definitely over 100m/s.
