Review on ๐Ÿ”Œ Hakko FX-901/P Battery-powered Soldering Iron by Erik Sanders

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great portable soldering iron.

General: I bought this soldering iron to use on my workbench at home and then toss it in my bag to take to work or the shops where I build. Was really impressed with the convenience and functionality of this iron. I use it for hobby electronics and it works well for that purpose. I highly recommend using rechargeable batteries with it (I use Enerloop Pros) so you don't burn disposables as this uses a lot of power. Pros: This is a very basic soldering iron. It's made of plastic but feels very sturdy, has a sturdy plastic iron cover that prevents accidental switching on in transit, and runs on 4 AA batteries. The tip is a great thing, so it can be used with simple electronics. It heats up quickly, and unless you leave it on all the time, with regular use it will last for several days before recharging the batteries. Cons: The two weak points of this soldering iron are the battery life and the ability to withstand a stab. Temperature. With heavy use I definitely notice that the tip gets colder than my traditional iron and sometimes I have to wait between solder joints for it to warm up again. For smaller hobbyist electronics this isn't really a problem, but for larger projects you'll need something more powerful. The other problem is that disposable batteries run out pretty quickly, so I highly recommend using rechargeable batteries with them. Investing in rechargeable batteries for this will save you tens if not hundreds of dollars in the long run. I actually like it as the weight is off the soldering tip and it feels very stable when holding it on the back without the cable, but that would definitely be a personal preference.

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
